CHAPEL OF ST BASIL
PHILIP JOHNSON ARCHITECT

The Chapel of St. Basil, designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1997, is a striking landmark on the University of St. Thomas campus in Houston. Its unique design incorporates basic geometric shapes – a cube, sphere (dome), and plane – constructed from contrasting materials like white stucco, black granite, and a gold-leafed dome. Inside, natural light floods through a cross-shaped window, illuminating a simple interior with a sculpted granite altar and wooden pews. The chapel serves as a place of worship and reflection for the university community and beyond, hosting daily Mass and special events.
